Emmett Loius Till is the young man who whistled at a white woman and got beat to death. I've always heard the story, but today I saw the pictures of him after he got beat, and I was horrified, I was crying watching that movie in class at school today. I just wanted to create a tribute for him, and hopefully he will know that I feel for him. Rest in peace, Emmett Louis Till. 1941-1955

I HAVE A DREAM ...
It's dark in my favourite dream. Someone is after me. Don't know why. I got fear. Then, suddenly I lift off. I fly away. Far away. How do I feel now? It is like swimming in the air, free and without any weight. No-one can reach me. No-one can touch me. It' s a wonderful feeling.
Otherwise I am alarmed by this dream somehow. What does it mean? That I want to escape from the real life sometimes? But from what? From success or the pressure of show business? No. I enjoy every second of my fame. If I could rewind my life back to the start I wouldn't change a thing, honestly.
When I was a little girl I knew already: I want to become famous. I always worked hard for this dream, very hard. I took singing lessons and joined performances at school. I did everything to become a good entertainer because pretty looks won't make up a star, whether in the music business nor in the movie industry.
Retrospectively many people insinuate that I hadn't a real childhood. That's a lie! My parents always had taken care that I had enough time to play. I missed nothing. In general I grew up regularly. I was a normal girl, almost. Because not every girl had her first stage experience with the age of nine. I remember this day exactly. A great wish became true as I joined a concert given by my aunt Gladys Knight in Las Vegas but I was anxious. I was afraid of the audience and afraid to fail. My bashfulness obstructed me at that time. I loved to escape into my dreams.

Today I am still a dreamer, a daydreamer. In a conversation with friends often I digress from the original subject. I stare self-forgetful at remoteness. Were I am then? I have no idea. Probably in higher spheres. Sometimes I really don't know. I am somehow mysterious, that's it. Even my parents don't know sometimes, how I think. Likely they put up with the fact that I am an introverted person. No, introverted is the wrong term. I have a complex personality. Actually I am nice and open but often I seclude myself. Other people are afraid of being alone but I like it. At least from time to time. Sometimes I lay on my bed in my Manhattan apartment and look only out of the window. I dream.
In my dream I am in Egypt, the land of my dreams. The culture and the pyramids - that fascinates me. You know, I'm sure, that I was an Egyptian in an earlier life. Only this way I can explain my fascination. This country casts a spell over me immediately although I knew it only from pictures. As I was very young my mother showed me holiday photos of friends. I saw hierogylphes, pyramids, masks, the people, strange ceremonies - I dived into another world. To explore this world is my greatest dream.

One day I will travel to Egypt. I will be there, were Cleopatra and the pharaoes lived. Unfortunately I can't meet them anymore. If I had a time machine I would visit the ancient Egypt. Who knows, perhaps Cleopatra and me would become very good friends. At least I would have a live experience of that ancient culture which I only know from books.
My books about Egypt are sacred. I use to read every story about Egyptian kings and queens. Sometimes I watch just the pictures. I dream to stand in front of these imposant buildings. Or I make a movie in Egypt. My favourite character to impersonate is Cleopatra. If there will be a remake of that movie I will apply for this character immediately!
But it hasn't to be this project. The main thing is to work in Egypt. I approached this wish by my participation in the making of The Queen of the Damned. In the sequel of Interview with the Vampire I impersonate the Egyptian queen Akasha. I admit it was like a fullfilled dream but unfortunately the movie wasn't produced in Egypt. Also my current involvement in the making of The Matrix II and III don't fullfill my dream. This time I am in Australia. It is a nice country, but even it's not Egypt.
Otherwise I have a great partner on the set: Keanu Reeves. Surely many women envy me this but I find him just a nice person. He is reserved as me - I like it. The man of my dreams - no. I prefer masculines who let me feel safe and secure. He must be strong as an Egyptian warrior. If I find someone like this I will marry him. Like all little girls I have dreamed always of a traditional wedding ceremony with horse and carriage and wearing white wedding dress. I am hopelessly romantic. I want a man and children - a lucky family.
This wish has to take second place yet. Next I want to let come true another dream, no, two dreams. I will design clothes and accessories together with a friend. Perhaps next year already.
My second dream is not tangible yet. My movie career has priority at the moment but when I am fully established as an actress I want to have a break. Then I want to enrol on a college. My subject of studies will be egyptology, of course, nothing else I could imagine.

The interview on which this text is founded took place in Paris mid of July. An introverted young woman sat on a sofa at an expensive hotel. She needed time before words flow easily. The conversation lasted 40 minutes. It was one of the last Aaliyah had with a journalist. Not only she dreamed of flying, her greatest dream, she said, is to go to Egypt and to study egyptology.

RARE Aaliyah VH1 Interview

VH1.com: Your video for "We Need a Resolution" and the album both feature a snake theme. What's that all about?

Aaliyah: I first dealt with snakes when I was in Australia and I did the photo shoot for the album. We used five pythons in the shoot. At first, I was a little nervous, but once I started to handle them, I totally fell in love and felt an affinity toward them. They're very mysterious creatures. They live in solitude, [and] there are times in my life [when] I just want to be by myself. There are times I can't even figure myself out. I feel they are very complex creatures, [but] at the same time, they're sexy, too. That's why they represent Aaliyah pretty well. They're dangerous, but quite beautiful. I thought that it would be an animal that could represent me on this album, so I wanted to take it from the photo shoot to the video and probably throughout the whole project.

VH1.com: It doesn't really seem like it's been five years since your last album, because your presence has been constant.

Aaliyah: That was something that I wanted to do. I wanted to take a break after One in a Million to just relax, think about how I wanted to approach the next album. Then when I was ready to start back up, Romeo happened, and so I had to take another break and do that film and then do the soundtrack, then promote it. That's what pushed the album back even further. When I did [the movie] Queen of the Damned, I decided to record the album at the same time so that I could release [it] this year.

VH1.com: Do you feel you've made any sacrifices in your music career to work on your movie career?

Aaliyah: No. I don't feel I made any sacrifices at all. Right now, I'm doing my best to juggle both. I don't want to abandon one for the other, and I don't think I need to sacrifice anything in order to put my all into either one of them.

VH1.com: Do you feel any pressure this time around that wasn't there for your last album?

Aaliyah: I don't think about my previous success. I'm happy that the work I've done in the past has been very successful. All I can do is leave it in God's hands and hope that my fans feel where I'm coming from. I took the time out to give my all. Being in Australia [filming Queen of the Damned] was really cool, because I really got to take a break from what was going on in the industry and be totally creative.

VH1.com: You worked with Timbaland on the first single, but you also worked with a lot of other new producers. Who did you work with this time, and why did you pick these particular people?

Aaliyah: These new producers are in our camp. They're with the Blackground [label] family. Their names are Bud'da, J. Dub, and E. Seats. [They're] amazing producers. They add a wonderful new flavor to the project, along with Timbaland, who has three cuts on the album … The sound that you heard before from Aaliyah is evident, but it's just a little bit different. It's a little bit more mature.

VH1.com: You said one of your favorite songs on the album is "I Can Be." What does it mean to you?

Aaliyah: I like that song, because it speaks about being the other woman. There are relationships out there where a guy already has a girlfriend and he's got one on the side, too. What's cool about it [is that] music is for everyone to interpret in [their] own way. You may hear a song and feel one way about it, and I feel another. My interpretation of that song is, even though I'm singing [about being] the other woman in your life, I'll be on the side, I don't mind. It's so dark. There's a part of [the character] that is so depressing, it makes you feel she doesn't really mean what she's saying. She likes this guy, but she really doesn't want to be the other girl on the side. It's really a sad story, and I liked that. These songs on this album talk about relationships in every aspect.

VH1.com: Have any of these songs been sitting around since the last album?

Aaliyah: My favorite song is "I Care 4 U." That song is 5 years old. I listened to it right when I finished One in a Million and … I wish I could've put it on that album. But we put it to the side [and] waited. It's a timeless, classic song. It still sounds amazing to this day. Missy [Elliott] wrote that [one].

VH1.com: Does "We Need a Resolution" speak to a specific person or situation?

Aaliyah: Not personally, no. This song just speaks about relationships and things that happen in life. This particular song doesn't touch on anything that happened to me in my life, it just speaks about a relationship that has gone a little sour and the lady's asking for a resolution. [She's saying] "We need to talk, we need to solve this."

VH1.com: Was shooting Queen of the Damned more challenging than Romeo Must Die?

Aaliyah: It's hard to compare them because they're so different. I play a fantastical creature in Queen of the Damned. I play a vampire, and not just any vampire. I'm playing the queen of all vampires! She's the mother; she's 4,000 centuries old. She's a bit evil but very regal, so there was a lot I had to do to really find [the character] Akasha. I took months of preparation for that. She had to have an accent, and [I] had to do wire work because she flew, so there was a lot that went into bringing Akasha to life.

VH1.com: You just finished shooting Queen of the Damned, and you're going to San Francisco before you go back to Australia for the Matrix sequels. How's that going?

Aaliyah: I don't have to go back to Australia until next year to finish shooting [the Matrix sequels]. It actually works out great, because I have the time needed to support the album and tour … It's kind of hard juggling both of them, because it's double the workload. But the way I look at is, I just let it work itself out, let it flow. If I don't think about it, it won't drive me crazy.

VH1.com: Have you been doing any special preparation for the Matrix sequels, given all the action scenes that are going to be in it?

Aaliyah: I know I'm involved in some action scenes, so they'll definitely train me for that. I'll be working with my acting coach before I go out there, to prepare for my character.

VH1.com: Can you tell me a little bit about your Matrix character, Zee?

Aaliyah: I can't say much about Zee, unfortunately. The Matrix is top secret. They're making sure we know that there isn't much that can be said right now. [Smiles]

What would your ideal guy be like?

"Someone who has a major sense of humor. Someone who's grounded and knows where he's going. My career's first for me, so he's got to be able to deal with that and do his own thing as well. Someone who's family oriented. I'd like to get married and maybe have a kid someday - but that's way down the road."

Who's your role model?

"Barbra Streisand is A Star Is Born. Acting, singing - she does it all."

How does the music you listen to today compare to the music you listened to growing up?

"I listen to a lot of the same artists I listened to when I was younger: Stevie (Wonder) and Sade. As I got older I got into alternative styles after my brother turned me unto them: Nine Inch Nails, Korn, Oasis and I started to check out things that I wouldn't have and returned to some that I did: Luther Vandross, Johnny Mathis!"

Who would be your ideal co-star or director?

"There's so many people that I admire and would love to work with. I'd love to work with Gwyneth Paltrow, I think she's amazing. And someone whom I've admired since I was young is Morgan Freeman. So at some point in my career if I had that opportunity, that would really be great."

What's the best advice you've been given?

"My parents just tell me, 'If you know what you want, you should stay determined and go for it. You can do anything.'"

Aaliyah Coments On "One In a Million":

"I was very involved. When I got with the producers, I told them I wanted an album with different moods, different flavors. I wanted to talk about relationships and have party songs."

Aaliyah on the comercial for "One In a Million":

"Vincent Herbert gave us the idea of coming up like out of an elevator, out of the ground. Then Blackground said, 'Why don't you just come out of the ground like an earthquake?' It took all day to do that commercial and it's hilarious because every time I watch it I say, 'We were out there for eight hours for a 30 second commercial.'"

Advice for other aspiring artists:

"Keep working hard and you can get anything that you want. If God gave you the talent, you should go for it. But don'tthink it's going to be easy. It's hard!"

Aaliyah's Coments On her image:

"Well, I think that the image is a part of me. I wear the baggy pants , the hats, the whole nine. And you know, I may add a little for the excitement and the intrigue in the videos, but my family has told me that little air of mystery that surrounds me is for real."

Aaliyah On Her Career:

"I meditate a lot and try to think good thoughts all the time. I like to remember that God is in my heart and leading me the way through any setbacks I might have and at the same time giving me guidance in my career."

Aaliyah On Being a Singer:

"Well, I obviously can't be home all the time, going to school and leading a normal life. I have to fluctuate between being tutored and trying to stay a good ol' Detroit girl. My mom manages me, and her presence helps keep me down to earth. I vow never to forget where I came from. I think it's important for people who listen to your music to feel they could BE you, that your not this untouchable being."

Aaliyah On Her mom:

"My mom was an educator and has a really good head on her shoulders. She teaches me to give back We have both Breast Cancers and Parkinson's disease in the family, so she makes sure I go visit patient's and also participate in fundraisers. She keeps me well rounded as an individual as well, making sure I am exposed to a lot of things other kids my age aren't."

Aaliyah On Her Image:

"I still wear my trademark sunglasses and have a couple of dozen pair and I plan to wear some of the more unusual ones onstage. It also keeps the lights from nearly blinding me. As for clothes, I like things fitted but that I can still move around in. I like to look sexy but not out there sexy. I don't wear things that are ridiculously short or low cut. I feel that your talent should do the talking not a revealing outfit."

Aaliyah's Future Goals:

"Of course, I would love to get into acting and I am talking to a few producers now. That would be really exciting to be a jack of all trades and do music, movies and TV. I love drama and I think I could be a good dramatic actress. I have to 'act out' emotions in my videos a lot and I try to seem as realistic as possible. I also would like to make bigger impact on the world by giving back, and using my celebrity to raise money for people who need it the most. What good is having money and being famous if you can't share it with others less fortunate than yourself? I always felt that you should treat others how you yourself want to be treated."

Aaliyah on Videogames:

"I have a PlayStaion at home and my favorite game is Resident Evil."

Who Aaliyah thinks is sexy (from back in '97):

"Larenz Tate is fine."

Aaliyah's Preferances of school (from back in '97):

"I like having a tutor on the road with me better because I am not a morning person, so me getting up at 8am to go to school just wasn't cool when you're used to bein' on the road. I like a tutor because I only had to do 3 hours of school a day and my projects were done at my own pace. But on the otherhand, I missed my friends."

Rumors about the lazy eye:

"I really think it's kinda funny how people like to make things up about you just because they can't figure you out. Just because I like to wear sunglasses and my hair over one eye doesn't mean that something is wrong with me. I mean I've heard them all. First I had a lazy eye. Then I was crossed eyed. And then I was rumored to have a glass eye. So then I took off the glasses and would switch my part back and forth. You know, one day over the lefteye and next over the right. Then it was said that I had something wrong with both eyes. I couldn't win for nothing. I mean, I love sunglasses. That's just me. It doesn't meansomething is wrong with my eyes. It's funny though, infact, I can see you clearly right now! Ha! Ha! But some people that don't even know me would like to argue with me on that one.

What was Aaliyah's most embarrising moment (from back in '97):

"I went to goof around with my dancers (we were battling) and I said, 'Naw, let me show you how it's done.' Needles to say, I ended up slipping on stage and I fell right on my butt and started laughin. My dad ran over to me and said, 'Are you okay?' and I guess he saw I was laughin so he started laughin. There was only my dancers and crew, but I still turned red."

Her Most rewarding moment:

"When a fan comes up to you and says I love your music, there's nothing better than that."

Roman Rogowiecki: You found a moment for interview with TV4, congratulation for your debut in "Romeo must die", please, tell, why now, when you are 20, when u are very popular vocalist, you started an actress carrer?

Aaliyah: I've always thinking about actress carrier and I started learn act when I was very young, but music was the most important to me..

RR: Oops, the pic fall down, it's a good sign, right? (I'm not sure if I understand here corrert, sound is a little blurry)

A: Yeah, great. The music was the most important to me, so I decided that first I must get a high position as a vocalist. Lately, I felt that I'm ready to act and then I got a proposition for this role, so I made a break.

RR: How many from yourself is in Trish, the character you play in a movie

A: We are quite similar in many cases, that's why I wanted to play that role. Trish is sweet, but strong girl, she's very very confident and also very independent. I got a conclusion that people who know a vocalist Aaliyah could also accept her in this incarnation, cuz this figure has many features of mine.

RR: Sometimes making a movie is like special terapy, actors could learn something knew about themself. What you learned about yourself on the set?

A: That's true. It's happen because people are trying to do things that they never would do in real life. About Trish, I can be tough like her, but only sometimes. She is strong at the whole time. Thanks to this role I learned to talk what I think. I wasn't like that before. Trish is the one who quickly talks what she thinks in every situation.

PART 2

RR: Wasn't you scared about the fact that usually music stars don't work out at movie screen, they're usually collapsing as an actors. Wasn't this scearing?

A: I didn't even thought about it. I was working really hard to did good, I didn't think about collapse. I had really positive attitude, I'm always an optimist. When I'm doing something, I'm always ready mentally, I'm playing from my love to acting. When people like what I'm doing, I'm happy, if they're not, I'll try come back with something different.

RR: And what was it working with polish director, Andrzej Bartkowiak? He showed a piece of America by Chinese's eyes.

A: I really love Andrzej, I adore him, work with him was a great thing! He has so many sensitivity. Since our first meet, before I even got the role, during trial shooting, Andrzej was very attentive, he let me be me. I'm just waiting to work with him again, he is very sweet.

RR: Thank you, ... (I don't understand words here). In music videos, on albums cover and of course now, you always have fantastic clothes, you were a model for Tommy Hilfiger, how you looking at fashion, what clothes Aaliyah wear?

A: Yes, I was working for Tommy one year, and I like fashionable clothes, but fashion don't rule me. If like something, I take it and I make it an Aaliyah outfit. I think I'm a person who creates a fashion and shows new trends. I'm wearing things that I like. It doesn't mean that I always wear an expensive clothes. In a plane you can see me in slippers and pyjamas. I like stylish clothes, but they aren't the most important to me.

RR: And who are your favourite designers?

A: I love D&G, and Roberto Cavalli, he is fantastic, his clothes are perfectly for me. You know, I have some favorites.

RR: It's over 4 years since your last album, "One in a million", you decided to show a new album, but why you gave up from singing?

A: Music is very important to me and I just finish my new album, I'm very satisfied from the whole material. Now I'm working very hard.

RR: There are 4 your new songs on "Romeo Must Die" soundtrack. How important is music for this movie?

A: It's very important. Usually the music is indispensable part of every movie. We cared to to match the right soundtrack. First we watched the movie and later we added the songs.

RR: How do you fell when you get the MTV award for video "Try again"?

A: That was a wonderful feeling, something amazing! It's a hard work to pleased your fans and get the attention from music industry. I had no words to descripe my happiness.

RR: How do you feel about still bigger number of hip-hop vocalists, don't you sceared about competitors?

A: No, I'm competing only with myself, with Aaliyah. I like a lot of new performers, I think that industry has a lot place for everybody. I always work about myself to be better, so I don't feel like I compete with somebody.

RR: Lately you started to write texts for songs, how you manage with this?

A: Yes, I'm trying myself as a text writer. I work with my brother, first we're listening to music and then we're writing words. It just works, I can't explane it.

RR: Did I say that I really like to hear you singing "Try Again"?

A: Oh no, please!

RR: Please, try!
